The Journey

The Essence of the Journey

Two worlds in one journey. First the bush: elephants beneath Tarangire’s baobabs, the forest of Lake Manyara, the open Serengeti and the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Then the coast, where Stone Town’s lanes lead down to the Indian Ocean and the days slow to the pace of the tide.

  1. ITarangire

    Beneath the Baobab Giants

Move through Tarangire’s ancient baobab country, where great elephant herds roam beneath trees that seem to hold the memory of the land.

  2. IILake Manyara

    Between Forest and Rift

From groundwater forest to shimmering lake shore, all beneath the dramatic wall of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

  3. IIISerengeti

    The Plains Without End

Vast grasslands where predators, grazing herds and the seasonal migration shape the daily drama of the wild.

  4. IVNgorongoro

    Within the Ancient Caldera

Descend into the volcanic crater, where forest, wetland and open grassland shelter a remarkable concentration of wildlife.

  5. VStone Town

    The Living Memory of Zanzibar

Carved doors and coral-stone lanes, shaped by centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean.

  6. VIZanzibar Coast

    Where the Ocean Slows

Spice-scented air, turquoise water and unhurried days to close the journey.

The Journey

Arusha

Arrival

Beneath Mount Meru

Arusha, beneath Mount Meru

You are met at Kilimanjaro airport and driven to a quiet lodge among coffee farms on the slopes of Mount Meru. The first evening is for settling in: a long dinner, an early night, and a briefing with your guide on the days ahead.

By road with your private guide · about 2 hours

Tarangire

National Park

Elephants and baobabs

Elephants beneath a baobab tree in Tarangire

Your first days on safari. Tarangire is known for its great herds of elephants, which gather along the river beneath ancient baobab trees. Game drives follow the light, out early and back in the heat of the day, with evenings by the fire as the bush goes quiet.

By road through the Rift Valley · about 1.5 hours

Lake Manyara

The Rift Valley

Forest, water and escarpment

Lake Manyara beneath the Rift Valley escarpment

Beneath the wall of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara is smaller and greener than the parks around it. Drive through groundwater forest where baboons and blue monkeys move overhead, then out to the lake shore, where flamingos gather in the shallows when the water is right.

Light aircraft from Lake Manyara to the Serengeti · about 1 hour

Serengeti

National Park

The endless plains

Acacia trees on the Serengeti plains

The heart of the journey. We place your camp to follow the season, close to the herds of the Great Migration where they are moving that month. Days are spent with your guide among the plains game and the predators that follow them, and nights under some of the darkest skies in Africa.

By road across the plains to the crater highlands · about 4 hours

Ngorongoro

Conservation Area

A world inside the crater

The floor of the Ngorongoro Crater

You stay on the crater rim, high and cool above the floor. Early the next morning you descend into the caldera ahead of most vehicles, for a day among lion, buffalo, hippo and, with patience, the rare black rhino. Lunch is taken by a quiet pool before the climb back up.

By road to the airstrip, then a light aircraft to Zanzibar · about 2 hours flying

Zanzibar

The Indian Ocean

The island finale

A dhow off the coast of Zanzibar

After the dust of the safari, the pace drops to that of the tide. Spend an afternoon in the lanes of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a morning among the spice farms, then let the rest of the days go to white sand, warm water and a dhow at sunset.

Private transfer to Zanzibar airport

Departure

Zanzibar, and the flight home

We time your transfer around your flight, with your luggage handled throughout, so you leave the island unhurried.

Along the Way

Across Tanzania’s northern safari circuit, and the island at the end.

  • Arusha beneath Mount Meru Arusha A first night beneath Mount Meru

Arrive, slow down and settle in before the safari, with the option to stay among the coffee rows of the Burka estate.

  • Elephants in Tarangire National Park Tarangire Two days among the baobabs

Full days in ancient baobab country, home to great elephant herds, with a picnic lunch out in the park.

  • Lake Manyara National Park Lake Manyara Forest and lakeshore

From groundwater forest to open shore, rich in birdlife, with the chance of the park’s tree-climbing lions.

  • The Serengeti plains Serengeti Three days on the plains

Full days across different corners of the park, following the herds and the lions, cheetahs and leopards that follow them.

  • The Ngorongoro Crater Ngorongoro Inside the crater, and with the Maasai

A day on the crater floor with lunch by the Hippo Pool, then an afternoon in a traditional Maasai village.

  • The coast of Zanzibar Zanzibar Slow days by the Indian Ocean

A short flight from Arusha to the coast, then unhurried days of white sand, turquoise water and long sunsets.

A few of many. We place them where they suit your journey. Tell us what you love.

Arusha Coffee Lodge, Arusha

Arusha

Arusha Coffee Lodge

Plantation-style houses set among the rows of a working coffee estate on the edge of Arusha, with Mount Meru beyond. It is green, quiet and minutes from the airstrip.

We use it as a gentle first night. After the long flight there is nothing to do but rest, walk the estate, and be ready when your guide collects you in the morning.

Why we like it

  • Set on a working coffee estate
  • Minutes from Arusha airport for the onward flight or drive
  • A calm first night before the safari begins
Tarangire Treetops, Tarangire

Tarangire

Tarangire Treetops

An Elewana lodge where each room is a treehouse, raised on a platform among ancient baobab and marula trees, on a private conservation area that borders Tarangire National Park.

Being outside the park boundary means you can do what the park itself does not allow: walking safaris with a guide, and night drives to look for the animals that only come out after dark.

Why we like it

  • Treehouse rooms set high among the baobabs
  • Walking safaris and night drives on the private concession
  • Elephant country, close to the Tarangire River
Turaco Ngorongoro Valley, Karatu

Karatu

Turaco Ngorongoro Valley

A new lodge in the green highlands of Karatu, part of Marriott’s Tribute Portfolio, set in the valley between Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater.

It places you well for both. Lake Manyara is a short drive down the escarpment, and the road up to the crater begins close by, so the days are spent in the parks rather than on the road.

Why we like it

  • Highland setting above the Rift Valley
  • A short drive to Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro gate
  • Calm, modern rooms after the dust of the day
Serengeti Migration Camp, Serengeti

Serengeti

Serengeti Migration Camp

An Elewana tented camp set among rocky hills above the Grumeti River, with each tent opening onto a wide wooden deck over the bush.

The river is the reason to be here. Hippos gather below the camp, and in season the herds of the great migration pass close by, so the wildlife often comes to you.

Why we like it

  • Spacious tents with private decks over the bush
  • Above the Grumeti River, with hippos below camp
  • Well placed for the migration in season
Lion's Paw, Ngorongoro

Ngorongoro

Lion’s Paw

A small luxury camp on the forested rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with tented suites, open fires and cool highland air in the evenings.

Sleeping on the rim means an early start is easy. You can be on the crater floor soon after the gates open, before most vehicles arrive, and back in the quiet of the camp by afternoon.

Why we like it

  • On the crater rim itself, not in the valley below
  • Early access to the crater floor
  • Fires and warm interiors for the cool highland nights
Zuri Zanzibar, Zanzibar

Zanzibar

Zuri Zanzibar

A beach resort at Kendwa on Zanzibar’s north-west coast, with bungalows and villas set in tropical gardens and its own spice garden, on one of the island’s best stretches of sand.

We end here on purpose. After the early starts of safari, the days slow to swimming, long lunches and sunsets over the water, with Stone Town an easy trip away if you want it.

Why we like it

  • A west-facing beach, so the sun sets over the sea
  • Bungalows and villas in tropical gardens
  • Stone Town within easy reach
