The Journey

The Essence of the Journey

Two worlds in one journey. First the bush: elephants beneath Tarangire’s baobabs, the forest of Lake Manyara, the open Serengeti and the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater. Then the coast, where Stone Town’s lanes lead down to the Indian Ocean and the days slow to the pace of the tide.

  1. ITarangire

    Beneath the Baobab Giants

Move through Tarangire’s ancient baobab country, where great elephant herds roam beneath trees that seem to hold the memory of the land.

  2. IILake Manyara

    Between Forest and Rift

From groundwater forest to shimmering lake shore, all beneath the dramatic wall of the Great Rift Valley escarpment.

  3. IIISerengeti

    The Plains Without End

Vast grasslands where predators, grazing herds and the seasonal migration shape the daily drama of the wild.

  4. IVNgorongoro

    Within the Ancient Caldera

Descend into the volcanic crater, where forest, wetland and open grassland shelter a remarkable concentration of wildlife.

  5. VStone Town

    The Living Memory of Zanzibar

Carved doors and coral-stone lanes, shaped by centuries of trade across the Indian Ocean.

  6. VIZanzibar Coast

    Where the Ocean Slows

Spice-scented air, turquoise water and unhurried days to close the journey.

The Journey

Arusha

Arrival

Beneath Mount Meru

Arusha, beneath Mount Meru

You are met at Kilimanjaro airport and driven to a quiet lodge among coffee farms on the slopes of Mount Meru. The first evening is for settling in: a long dinner, an early night, and a briefing with your guide on the days ahead.

By road with your private guide · about 2 hours

Tarangire

National Park

Elephants and baobabs

Elephants beneath a baobab tree in Tarangire

Your first days on safari. Tarangire is known for its great herds of elephants, which gather along the river beneath ancient baobab trees. Game drives follow the light, out early and back in the heat of the day, with evenings by the fire as the bush goes quiet.

By road through the Rift Valley · about 1.5 hours

Lake Manyara

The Rift Valley

Forest, water and escarpment

Lake Manyara beneath the Rift Valley escarpment

Beneath the wall of the Rift Valley, Lake Manyara is smaller and greener than the parks around it. Drive through groundwater forest where baboons and blue monkeys move overhead, then out to the lake shore, where flamingos gather in the shallows when the water is right.

Light aircraft from Lake Manyara to the Serengeti · about 1 hour

Serengeti

National Park

The endless plains

Acacia trees on the Serengeti plains

The heart of the journey. We place your camp to follow the season, close to the herds of the Great Migration where they are moving that month. Days are spent with your guide among the plains game and the predators that follow them, and nights under some of the darkest skies in Africa.

By road across the plains to the crater highlands · about 4 hours

Ngorongoro

Conservation Area

A world inside the crater

The floor of the Ngorongoro Crater

You stay on the crater rim, high and cool above the floor. Early the next morning you descend into the caldera ahead of most vehicles, for a day among lion, buffalo, hippo and, with patience, the rare black rhino. Lunch is taken by a quiet pool before the climb back up.

By road to the airstrip, then a light aircraft to Zanzibar · about 2 hours flying

Zanzibar

The Indian Ocean

The island finale

A dhow off the coast of Zanzibar

After the dust of the safari, the pace drops to that of the tide. Spend an afternoon in the lanes of Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and a morning among the spice farms, then let the rest of the days go to white sand, warm water and a dhow at sunset.

Private transfer to Zanzibar airport

Departure

Zanzibar, and the flight home

We time your transfer around your flight, with your luggage handled throughout, so you leave the island unhurried.

Grand Hyatt Tokyo

Tokyo

Grand Hyatt Tokyo

A landmark hotel set in the Roppongi Hills complex, three minutes on foot from Roppongi Station. Rooms look out across the city, and Tokyo Tower stands on the skyline at night.

We choose it as a soft landing. After a long flight you are close to the Mori Art Museum and the observatory, with a spa, an indoor pool and ten restaurants and bars under one roof, and Ginza and the Imperial Palace gardens a short drive away.

Why we like it

  • Wide views across the city from the guest rooms
  • Roppongi Hills on the doorstep, with its art museum and observatory
  • A spa, indoor pool and ten restaurants and bars to ease the jet lag
Hyatt Centric Kanazawa

Kanazawa

Hyatt Centric Kanazawa

A design-led hotel that opened in 2020, directly in front of the west exit of Kanazawa Station. It is as easy a base as the city offers, and the rooftop terrace is the place to be at sunset.

We like the position. Omicho Market is within reach, Kenrokuen and the geisha quarter are a short taxi ride, and the next morning the car to Shirakawa-go collects you at the door.

Why we like it

  • Two minutes on foot from Kanazawa Station
  • A rooftop terrace bar over the city at dusk
  • Ishikawa ingredients at the all-day restaurant, FIVE
Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan

Takayama

Honjin Hiranoya Kachoan

A traditional ryokan in the centre of Takayama, mixing the old and the modern, with tatami rooms and wooden baths that look out over the town.

This is where the mountain road ends. Dinner is kaiseki, with Hida beef, served in your room or in the restaurant, and in the morning the Miyagawa market and the old merchant quarter are close by.

Why we like it

  • Kaiseki and Hida beef dinners, in your room or the restaurant
  • Tatami rooms and wooden baths with views over the town
  • Close to the Miyagawa morning market and Takayama Jinya
Sowaka

Kyoto

Sowaka

A former ryotei in the heart of Gion, restored in sukiya style with hand-carved timber, shoji screens and bamboo lattice. Rooms are arranged around a quiet garden courtyard, so it feels like a private residence rather than a hotel.

We end the journey here on purpose. You can walk the lanes of Gion at the quiet ends of the day, and dinner downstairs is kaiseki at Gion Loka, the hotel’s own restaurant.

Why we like it

  • Sukiya-style architecture, hand-carved wood and shoji screens
  • Rooms around a private garden courtyard
  • Kaiseki at Gion Loka, with vegetarian and allergy needs catered for
