The Journey

Palermo

Arrival

The Arab-Norman city

A palace with red domes in Palermo

You are met on arrival and settled into your hotel on the bay. Palermo carries a thousand years of layered history: the gold mosaics of the Cappella Palatina, the red domes of San Giovanni degli Eremiti and the Arab-era palace of La Zisa, all explored privately. Wander Ballarò, a market that has traded since Arab times, and end the day above the city at Monreale Cathedral.

Private drive along the coast · about 1 hour

Cefalù

Day by the sea

A cathedral above the water

The cathedral of Cefalu above the sea

A day along the north coast to Cefalù, where a Norman cathedral rises above an old fishing town. Part of the same UNESCO heritage as Palermo, its mosaics rival any in Sicily. Walk the medieval lanes down to the harbour, then return to Palermo for the evening.

Private transfer across the island to Ortigia · about 3 hours

Ortigia

Syracuse

The island old town

The old town of Ortigia by the sea

Ortigia is the ancient heart of Syracuse, a small island of stone lanes, baroque squares and sea views. Walk the Greek ruins of Neapolis with a private guide, step into the cathedral built around a Greek temple, and spend the evening by the water as the old town settles.

Private drive into the hills · about 30 minutes

Noto

Val di Noto

The golden baroque

The baroque streets of Noto

Rebuilt in honey-coloured stone after the earthquake of 1693, Noto is one of the most beautiful baroque towns in Europe. Its churches and palazzi glow at golden hour, and the town is best seen slowly, on foot, with a granita in the shade of a café.

Private transfer north along the coast · about 2 hours

Taormina & Etna

The east coast

Above the volcano

Taormina with Mount Etna behind

Taormina sits high above the Ionian Sea, with Mount Etna smoking quietly on the horizon. Explore the ancient Greek theatre at its quietest hour, then head up onto the slopes of Europe’s most active volcano by private 4x4, among lava fields and silent craters.

Private transfer to Milazzo, then by boat to the islands

Aeolian Islands

Salina

The volcanic islands

The volcanic slopes of Stromboli above the sea

The journey ends among the Aeolian Islands, a scattering of volcanic islands in a deep blue sea. Spend slow days on a private boat between coves and black-sand beaches, swim in clear water, and watch Stromboli glow against the night sky.

Boat to Milazzo, then private transfer to Catania airport · about 2 hours

Departure

Catania, and the flight home

We time the boat and the airport transfer around your flight, with your luggage handled throughout, so you leave the islands unhurried.

Raffles Hotel Singapore

Singapore

Raffles Hotel Singapore

Opened in 1887 and carefully restored in 2019, Raffles is an all-suite hotel on Beach Road, behind the white colonial facade that has stood for more than a century. Every suite is looked after by its own butler.

We choose it for the night before the train. The Long Bar, where the Singapore Sling was first poured, is downstairs, the courtyards are quiet by evening, and Woodlands is about 30 minutes by car when it is time to board.

Why we like it

  • All suites, with butler service throughout
  • The Long Bar and the Writers Bar under one roof
  • A short drive to the train at Woodlands
The Eastern and Oriental Express

On board

Eastern & Oriental Express

Three nights on Belmond’s restored train, running from Singapore up Malaysia’s west coast and back. Your cabin is private, with its own bathroom, and is made up as a bedroom each night while you dine.

The train is the stay. Days pass between the dining car, the bar car and the open-air observation car at the rear, with your steward on hand from the moment you board at Woodlands to the moment you step off.

Why we like it

  • A private cabin with its own bathroom, turned down each night
  • Menus by chef André Chiang in the dining car
  • The open-air observation car as the countryside slides past
The Sanchaya, Bintan

Bintan

The Sanchaya

A small estate of villas and suites on Bintan’s north coast, built in a colonial style around lawns, tropical gardens and its own stretch of private beach on Lagoi Bay.

We end the journey here on purpose. After the train, the pace drops at once: a villa with its own pool, long afternoons by the sea, and dinner on the terrace as the light goes. Singapore is about an hour back by ferry.

Why we like it

  • Villas with private pools, set in quiet gardens
  • A private beach on Lagoi Bay
  • An hour by ferry from Singapore
